Heyer, Hair and Hare

Not that I've had a ton of time to do reading lately, but here's a couple of books I've had the chance to read through the last while.

Yes, for all you Shakespeare and Star Wars fans, now you have Luke, Leia and Han in iambic pentameter!  'O help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, help.  Thou art mine only hope!' and  'True it is, that these are not the droids for which thou search'st' included.  It's a pretty fun way to read the classic space tale from my childhood.  Another one I've started is:

At last I know 'How to Escape from a Giant Octopus' and 'How to Treat a Tongue Stuck to a Pole!'  With helpful diagrams you can learn 'How to Escape from a Sinking Car', 'How to Get a Job You're Not Qualified For'...such as a brain surgeon, 'How to Survive If You Forget Your Anniversary', 'How to Land a Plane' and many other very important things.

I personally find it fascinating to have explanations for how to survive...practically anything because, hey, you never know!

I went to see Austenland this week. Freaking awesome!  Loved it.  For those of you who may not know, it's based on a book by Shannon Hale and is about a Jane Austen fanatic who goes to Austenland which is a vacation spot for girls like her that is like immersing yourself in regency England.  I love reading Jane Austen and regency romances.  Other good authors are Sarah Eden, Julianne Donaldson (whose new book comes out in 2 weeks) and of course the amazing Georgette Heyer.  I'm going to reread The Grand Sophy by Heyer next.  Her fun plots and witty and heart-warming characters are so fun.  My favorite Heyer books include: Black Sheep, Faro's Daughter, Friday's Child, Venetia, The Devil's Cub and others.  I need to do a blog or two on my favorite books.
On to subject 2: my hair.  It's close to waist length, brown and curly.  It's very thin, frizzy and sheds like you wouldn't believe and it's turning gray.  We find hair on the bathroom floor (lots every day), we've found it in food, on furniture, on clothes, even woven into Lyle's shirts.  As it's summer time it's hot and heavy and makes my neck sweat.  And because of it's length it gets caught in EVERYTHING.  Every time Lyle puts his arms around my shoulders, it gets pulled.  I pull it myself anytime I reach and yank down the back of my shirt.  It gets caught in my fingers, necklaces, earrings, my purse strap, house doors, car doors, seat belts, and even my belt buckle once.  It's almost been pulled into machines at work, gets caught under my armpits, has ticked the inside of my elbow and I actually almost shrink wrapped my hair to a pallet at work one day.  So why don't I cut it?  Because it's pretty, surprisingly easy to take care of and my husband loves it.  It's also taught me patience.  We women always know how it feels when you get to the 'awkward stage' of growing your hair out: the stage where you can't make your hair look good no matter what you do.  I've learned how to stick it out through hard times because of my hair and I'm proud I've been able to keep it long since I love it so much.
And subject 3: this summer has been SO busy!  Especially the last month.  This is how I feel:

My life:
* Work a full time job
*Tuesday nights with Annie
*Saturday nights visiting Taylor
*Every other weekend with kids
*Figuring out singing time for Sunday
*Practicing organ for sacrament
*Parenting classes
*Home work for parenting classes
*Helping mom remodel her house
*Visiting with family
*Making time for friends
*Making dinner for visiting teaching companion and/or sisters
*Laundry
*Dishes, always dishes!
*House work and more house work (how do things get dirty again 5 minutes after you've cleaned them?)
*Fix nutritious and tasty meals every day (Bahaha, not at my house! But the attempt is still there)
*Fix whatever is broken around the house
*Go to the store for food, clothes and miscellaneous items (very seldom all at the same store)
*Go to the library
*Go to community council meetings
*Practice violin and piano
*Doing something pleasurable like reading (Not often lately!)
*Family Home Evening
*Scripture study and prayer
*Blogging and journal writing
*Yard work
*Get the car fixed (isn't there almost always something that's broken?)
*Get a restful sleep (Not so fast.  Can you say INSOMNIA?)
*Play the piano for a baptism...or two
*Regular exercise...or in it's absence staring into the mirror and wondering when someone is going to ask you if you're pregnant

Anything I'm missing?  I'm sure there is.  How do we stinking do it?  We can't.  That's just all there is to it.  Something's got to give...let's just hope it's not my sense of humor!  Yes, I got the dishes done today, but I seriously thought about scrounging up a pair of chopsticks and a spatula to eat our Mac 'N Cheese with...straight out of the pot.  And who needs a clean glass?  I'm sure I can somehow fit my mouth under the water dispenser in the fridge door!

I was thinking the other day about Aesop's fable about 'The Tortoise and the Hare.'  I've always thought how stupid the hare was rushing through the race and then lollygagging so he didn't win.  Now I see it differently.  The hare was probably a modern woman and/or mother who had to stop at Costco, Walmart, the dentist and 25 other places on her way in between the start and finish line.  And the falling asleep so the hare didn't notice the tortoise passing?  No!  It was an exhaustion induced collapse which resulted in a comatose-like nap.  And some how I'm seeing the hare as not caring at all that the tortoise made it's way over the finish line first.  I think the hare was glad to get over the finish line at all!  Slow and steady wins the race?  Who cares?  I don't have time for that!  I have to go pick up a new pair of sneakers and respond back to about 12 texts and find time to do that oh-so-important pinning on Pinterest!  And on top of it all, in the middle of the morning rush to get ready for work I'm supposed to not scream at my husband because he's eating his breakfast cereal too loud!  Geez!  I think we busy women need a break!  We deserve some lazy time.
That's right!  I protest this being so busy that I don't notice that my shirt is stained and that there's something on my face.  I'm going to kick back and put my feet up, pull up my hair and put the fan on my neck and pick up a Georgette Heyer book.  Who cares if everything falls apart in the meantime?  No more doing anything today for me...except of course finishing my blog...and going to the chiropractor...lunch with cousin Colin...visiting Harper...double date with friends tonight...going to the store...CRAP!  Oh well, maybe I can take some time tomorrow!  Here's to being given the strength to get through another hectic day and still keep my sanity (mostly)!
