GIRLS CAMP
BY:ANNIE

Painting at the museum
We went on a scavenger hunt, then to an art museum, then we looked up our family history for stake pioneer trek next month, then the real adventure started.  We started to go up the mountain so we turned on the music well it was one of the girls favorite songs so we all sang along a kinda danced to it.  Then after what seemed like forever we finally got to the campsite, we put up our tent and figured out the sleeping situation.  We stayed up all night talking.

The next day we woke up and we all went on a hike.  We came back and made paracord bracelets.  After dinner we did a skit that was so funny I really liked how it went.  Then we cooked starbursts over the fire.  Then we all went to bed.

The third day we woke up ate breakfast and made frosted jars.  Then we went to the reservoir, and i scraped my knee.  Then we stayed up all night and the camp director even got mad at us for making too much noise.  In the morning we packed up and left, and that's the end of it.

THE END!!!!!!!! :D

Mini Vacay

My husband is so great!  I've been stressed out lately so I asked him if we could go away for the weekend.  He agreed.  We went to Brigham City.  We got a hotel room for a couple of nights.  We got up there Friday night in time to go to bed basically.  And honesty, Saturday morning didn't start out really great.  I woke up feeling sick.  I got myself up and going and we went to Promontory to the Golden Spike historical spot.  Once we got there I started feeling worse.  I feel really bad because we paid $7 for me to be sick in the visitor's center bathroom for most of the 40 minute reenactment they did of the ceremonial tapping in of the golden spike to complete the transcontinental railroad.  Thankfully Lyle took pictures.  Afterwards I had to lie down in the back of the car while Lyle took me back to the hotel.  Because I was feeling sick, we missed the session we were going to go to at the Brigham City temple.  We'll have to try for that another day.
Here's me standing on the other end of that same rocket.
Gives you an idea how big it is.
Here's Lyle grunting while holding up a rocket!
Talk about Man of Steel!
Thankfully, after I rested for a little while I felt a lot better.  We ended up going to eat at Maddox.  I debated between getting a turkey steak (which is what I ended up with and which was really good) or bison.  They have really good homemade rolls and corn pones with their famous raspberry butter.  I also had a sassperilla (yum!).  We ended up going to see Man of Steel which I've been wanting to see and which Lyle has been avoiding for the same amount of time.  I'm glad he took me.  I loved it and he even said it was better than he expected.
Today we ended up going by Thiokol and stopped to see their rocket display.  It's interesting how many parts for the space shuttle and for missiles for the armed forces are made here in Utah.
The Spiral Jetty
The pink water of the Salt Lake.
Supposedly it's pink because of the brine shrimp?

We also went out to see the Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake.  I hadn't heard of it before.  It's a huge spiral built of rocks that some guy built a long time ago (vagueness, thy name is Laura).  I really don't know much about it, but it was really beautiful and the water was nice and cool.  But the salt on my feet made them itch afterwards.  Ah well, it was still a really nice weekend.  What a nice short getaway.  Then we get home and the phone's ringing and there's problems to solve and I want to get in the car and leave again.  I'm just glad we enjoyed our weekend together.

Gifts

I won!  I won!  Woot Woot!
Today we had our summer party for work.  Once a year we have a catered lunch.  This year we had barbecue chicken and ribs, fruit, salad, potatoes and brownies or ice cream sandwiches.  After the party is over, we get to leave and go home for the rest of the afternoon (paid time off!).  We always look forward to the summer party.  The last part of the party is the giving of prizes.  This year my name was called as a winner!  Guess what I won?  An UGLY STIK!  Hahaha.  I had no idea what that was.  It's a fishing pole.  No, I don't fish.  But I won!  I won an Ugly Stik!  Not many people could say that!
My Ugly Stik...which I will probably take back to the store and trade in for something else.

     Moving on to other gifts.
Annie and her homemade card and bookmark
Given to Lyle on Father's Day
Father's Day was Sunday.  This never hits me as hard as Mother's Day (thankfully), but it does make me a bit sad that I can't give my husband a child.  Even so, Lyle is a good father and I love any opportunity to give him something.  This year for father's day, Lyle decided he wanted some new pants as his gift.  You have no idea how thrilled I was!  Lyle almost never buys clothes for himself, even though I randomly nag him about it.  We bought him 3 new pairs of pants and I even found some shirts he likes!  I was almost rapturous over new shirts.  He drives me nuts with his unwillingness to buy or let me buy him some new shirts.  Half of the shirts he owns are old and have logos from former trucking companies he's worked for.  But they still fit and they're comfortable.  The shirts I really don't like are the ones that have holes in them that he refuses to get rid of!  He still even wears them in public sometimes (shudder).  Anyway, back to the point, Lyle allowed us to buy him 3 new shirts as well (on the condition that with his new replacements, he gets to choose which shirts to get rid of...drat!  Oh well, I guess I can't have everything.).  All in all, a successful giving of gifts for Father's Day- Did I also mention that Lyle is VERY hard to figure out gifts for?  He never wants ANYTHING.  It's so frustrating- and I was very pleased with the results.
Another gift I received was a couple of days ago.  Lyle brought home these:

The reason: I went to pick up Annie on Tuesday which is our night with the kids.  I do this pretty often, so really, he was buying me roses for no reason.  I am so happy!  What a big cuddly sweetheart!  Though I wouldn't advise you to call him that.  I'm not sure he'd like it.  At least from anyone other than me.

Super Duper

I found out this week that my husband has a super power.  That's right!  That's the only real way I can explain it.  It's happened numerous times in the past but I guess I needed just one more manifestation to truly see it for what it is.  Yesterday I got up and ran some errands then came home and for about 40 minutes I just sat and played the piano.  I took advantage of a little free time.  Then I got back up because, well, the laundry doesn't do itself (unfortunately).  As soon as I had that armful of laundry my phone rings and it's my husband calling.  He didn't call any time during the previous 40 minutes, just as soon as I had my hands full.  I'm really amazed at how he does it!  I can be doing absolutely nothing and the second I have to go to the bathroom and leave my phone in my room, he calls!  And if I don't answer he calls again!  Other times, I've had the neighbor kids at my door wanting me to get their ball that they kicked into my backyard and someone calls on the phone then the oven timer rings and Lyle thinks that's the appropriate moment to contact me.
I thought at first he must have someone spying on me to tell him when the most annoying moment would be to phone me, but that theory has flaws.  No unaccounted for money going out of the account and I'm pretty sure of the times I'm alone in the house (no suspicious vehicles on the road either, or strangers hanging around).  Of course he could have cameras installed somewhere, but again, no money missing.  I've now come to realize it's a super power.  He ALWAYS knows the most imperfect moment to call me.  We laugh about it often.  In fact, yesterday after I called him back the first thing he asked was, 'were you on the toilet?'

So here's the question: do I have superpowers?  If I do, what are they?  And if not, what would I want them to be if I did have any?  I asked a few of my friends for their opinions as to super powers.  Katie would like to be able to disappear at will.  I'd have to agree with Katie, invisibility looks pretty good to me (no pun intended). Briant would like to have super human strength and endurance.  Chastity would like to be able to fly...to escape to an exotic island when the world is bringing her down (Note to Chastity: if this super power develops, I fully expect you to TAKE ME WITH YOU!).  Sandra wants to be Elastigirl...(hahaha, I love this reason)...so she can be taller and reach tall things!  And Sam...really?  Any super power and you want X-ray vision to look at hot girls?  I'm not surprised.  Thanks for giving me a good laugh!  Annie wants to be a shape shifter...that might make it hard to recognize her sometimes, but I'm thinking I like this one.  I could shed those extra pounds that stay glued to my tummy and hips!  Apparently Lyle would like to produce money out of thin air.  Not bad, that one.
So folks, what do you think my super power is?  I'm thinking along the lines of...being irritated at the speed of light.  Or maybe super sleeping?  How about Wonder Blog Woman?  Maybe not.  Well, here's some thoughts about super powers that came to my mind.

Telekinesis- you know, moving stuff with your mind.  Eh, maybe.  I see it would be fun to be able to smack the kids with a pillow without touching it and the look at them innocently.  Or if my husband was reaching for his towel while in the shower, to move it just out of reach.  But that could go to my head a little and I would want to use my powers for good, not evil.

Weather control- This would be useful.  It would never be too hot or too cold.  And I could finally make it snow, just on my lawn but not on my walks or the streets.  And I could bring on the rain when I wanted.  But I'd have to watch out for my temper.  I'd hate to accidentally strike people with lightning when they made me mad.

Time Travel- This is a tricky one.  If you would go back in time and change things, would you?  And if so what would you change?  What if like the butterfly effect,  you changed things and you came back and everything would be different?  I think I'm gonna pass on this one.  Too many what ifs.

Mind Reading- No thank you.  I don't want to know what other people think.  I have a hard enough time sorting out my own thoughts.

Super Reproduction- (bet you never thought of that one).  A few years ago at a family reunion we were about ready to start the Talent Show and my aunt Kama (who had 11 children) said, 'I can't do my only talent.  I can't get up on stage and have a baby while everybody watches'.  I laughed so hard!  Truly, I wonder if this power really does exist (I have a shrewd notion that the Duggar parents are both afflicted with it).  The infertile part of me thinks of Tevya in 'Fiddler on the Roof' when he says: May the Lord strike me with it, and may I never recover!  Note: He was talking about riches, not reproduction.  Also, I'm not sure I'd be still thinking that after a few kids.

Super Speed- Well, you'd never learn patience if you could do everything as fast as you want it (down side).  But on the other hand, you'd get everything you want really quickly (up side)!

Empath- I don't think I'd really like feeling how other people feel in addition to mine.  I think it would be pretty confusing.  Although you would certainly develop compassion much more quickly.

Wish Granting- You know, like a genie does.  What if you could give those closest to you everything they always wanted.  Pro or con?  Maybe a little of both?

Bulletproof- This one seems kind of superfluous to me.  As I've never been in a gunfight, I can't say I'd use it much.

Power Over Elements-  A fun one to imagine.  You'd always win in a snowball fight.  But I'd be afraid of accidentally setting someone on fire when I'm angry...maybe I could train myself to douse them with water instead...or blow them away?  That might work.

Teleportation- This one I'm on board with.  If someone just annoys me POOF!  I'm somewhere else instead.  Maybe the movie theatre, or Lagoon, or the chocolate factory, or Leatherby's...maybe this one would be a little more trouble than I bargain for.

Super Disco Dancing Girl- That's looking a little more like me.

I think after all, I might be the most like the PMS Avenger (watch the trailer).

My Heart List

I've been thinking a lot lately about the things I want in my life and about learning to become happy with who I am and to appreciate the blessings I have right now.  I've got a project in mind that I'm praying about but in the mean time I thought it would be fun to share something.
A few years ago I went to a therapist to specifically help me through the difficult time I was having emotionally with my infertility.  I had the opportunity to learn about what's called a 'heart list'.  My therapist was trying to help me to think about other things I wanted to do in my life that would bring me personal satisfaction.  She recommended I start a 'Heart List'.  It's kind of like a bucket list...but a bit different.  It's things that you would like to do and experience that when you think about them, make your heart flutter.  They are things that can be realistic, but also things that can be impossible.  But the point is that they're things that interest you and that you can find some sort of fulfillment in thinking about them, or doing them, or learning about them.  I worked on my heart list for a little while, though not as faithfully as I could have, but I haven't thought about it in a while.  I pulled it out and decided it would be fun today to share some of the things on my Heart List.

Let's Go To the Movies Part 4

And here we are again, exploring the fascinating world of film through my eyes.  Today let's explore the world of Romantic Comedies!  Here's some of my pics this month:
    1. Return To Me- (2000) David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, Carroll O'Connor and Bonnie Hunt.  A woman who's been sick all her life is in the hospital dying and is given a new heart and another chance at life.  Then she meets a man and there seems to be a special connection.  They fall in love.  Enter the quirky best friend with a ton of kids and a husband who is the comedy relief and her grandfather (who owns the restaurant where the couple meet) and his cronies who add the 'feel good' family part of the film.  Then the woman finds out that the heart she has been given belonged to her love's wife who died in a car accident.  How to feel now?  Grace feels guilty for living when Bob's wife couldn't and Bob feels conflicted because he loves two women and feels like he's choosing one over the other.  I confess I like David Duchovny and this movie I found heart warming and funny. The addition of the big family element makes it a good choice for a light-hearted comedy with a touch of drama as the couple learn how to cope with the new twist in their relationship.  Enjoy!
     2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding- (2002) Nia Vardalos and John Corbett.  We all laughed hilariously when we first saw this popular indie film about a Greek girl still living with her parents with no friends (boys or otherwise), overshadowed by her huge, loud and obnoxious family and in need of a makeover.  Wanting to change her life, she starts taking college courses (which her father is opposed to) and changes her appearance and job and starts enjoying her life for the first time.  Then she meets the man of her dreams.  He's good looking, sweet, and nearly perfect...other than the fact that he's not Greek.  The couple sneak around at first until the family finds out and Toula is told to break up with him.  Unwilling to do this since she's in love, the couple continue to see each other and become engaged.  The hilarity of the engagement, the families meeting, and Toula's family taking over every aspect of the wedding is unique and watching Toula learn to appreciate her heritage instead of being embarrassed about it and her parents learning to accept a new idea (a new member of the family who isn't Greek) is the moving part of the film.  Don't miss this one.
     3. Notting Hill- (1999) Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant.  Ever wonder what it would be like to date a movie star?  Well, in this little flick Julia Roberts plays...a movie star (quite a stretch I'm sure!).  Hugh Grant plays Will, a goofy but lovable travel book store owner who literally runs into the uber-popular Anna Scott, movie star, one day.  A short awkward experience for a first meeting and Will is left wondering what it would be like to get to know Anna on a personal level.  They meet many times under different circumstances and the good and bad of being with a celebrity makes itself known.  Will's sister and friends add fun to the dynamic as well as Will's unbelievably stupid flatmate.  The question ends up being: is fame really worth the price you pay for it, and how can love survive through the constant bombardment of criticism and lack of privacy that comes with the life of the famous?
     4. Win a Date With Tad Hamilton- (2004) Kate Bosworth, Topher Grace and Josh Duhamel.  Another date-a-celebrity movie.  Tad Hamilton is America's heartthrob but behind the scenes he's a bad boy getting a bad reputation.  In order to save said reputation, his manager and his agent (both hilariously named Richard Levy) devise a tactic to restore it: A 'Win a Date With Tad Hamilton' contest.  Girls all over America scramble to enter and Rosalee Futch, a small town West Virginia good girl wins the contest.  She's a consummate Tad Hamilton fan and can't wait for her chance to meet him.  To Tad's surprise she's gorgeous and just quirky enough to catch his attention.  The clincher, she's unwilling to sleep with him on their date.  Her wholesomeness makes him decide he needs a change in his life and he comes to West Virginia to spend more time with her.  This infuriates Pete, Rosalee's manager at the Piggly Wiggly who also happens to be her friend and the boy who's secretly in love with her.  The longer Tad stays, the more Pete realizes that he's losing his chance with Rosalee.  When Rosalee finds out about Pete's feelings will she choose Tad, the man of her dreams, or the hometown boy next door Pete?  Good clean fun.
     5. Heart and Souls- (1993) Robert Downey Jr., Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Tom Sizemore, Kyra Sedgwick, David Paymer and Elisabeth Shue.  One night 4 passengers with very different lives get on the bus not knowing it will change their lives.  The distracted bus driver crashes the vehicle and there are no survivors.  At the same time, a woman in a car is having a baby, very close to the sight of the crash.  These 4 passengers end up tied to the newborn baby boy, Thomas.  They grow up with him and are his imaginary friends, since he is the only one who can see them.  They love him like he's their own child, but when they realize how hard they're making his life by just being in it, they disappear from him...though still stuck to him, they no longer interact with him and he can't see them anymore.  He grows up and one day the bus with it's bus driver show up again to take them to heaven.  Unfortunately for them, they were never told that the reason they were tied to this man was so he could help them with their unfinished business.  Now it's a race against time to reappear to Thomas, get him to drop his whole life for a few days and help them finish their business before they move on.  The hilarity of this is paramount.  And his current girlfriend thinks he's going crazy.  Fortunately, he is able to help each of his friends and in the process help himself.  A good cast and an original premise make this one you don't want to miss.
      6. The Holiday- (2006) Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black.  Amanda, after breaking up with her live-in boyfriend decides she needs to get away for Christmas.  Where to?  How about England?  She finds a cozy little cottage in Surrey and contacts the owner.  Iris, finding out that the man she's in love with (who frankly has treated her badly but won't let her go) is engaged to be married is horribly upset.  She hears from Amanda who wants to rent her place, but it's only available for exchange...they switch houses, cars, everything for 2 weeks.  Sounds like paradise to both girls so Amanda comes to England and Iris goes to L.A.  In England, Amanda meets Graham, Iris's brother, and though their relationship is at first purely physical, she finds out just what kind of man he is...a widower with two adorable little girls.  In the meantime, Iris is enjoying being away from her life and she meets Arthur, an elderly man who was a screenwriter in the golden age of Hollywood and Miles who is a film composer who is funny and treats her well.  So when it's time to go home, how do these women give up the men they've come to care about?
     7. Confessions of a Shopaholic- (2009) Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy.  Rebecca Bloomfield is a shopaholic.  Brought up by ultra-thrifty parents, she has learned the pure joy of purchasing what you want...until she realizes she's severely in debt and can't pay her bills.  But she also can't stop shopping.  She accidentally (sort of) gets a job writing for...wait for it...a financial planning magazine who have no idea just how bad her personal fiduciary troubles are.  She has a collection agent, who will do whatever it takes, out to get her and she knows nothing about finances.  She is able to surprisingly write very good, and popular, financial articles by using her knowledge of shopping and the problems she's learned and writes her articles under the guise of 'the woman in the green scarf'.  She falls in love with her boss, who is intrigued by this unconvential young woman.  But when he finds out, on national TV no less, that she's a fraud, what will happen, and will Rebecca ever be able to control her need to find happiness only through VISA?
     8. Sliding Doors- (1998) Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch.  One morning Helen gets up and goes to work...and gets fired.  On her way home, she narrowly misses getting on the subway and from here on the movie splits into two parts: Helen's life and how her life would have been had she got to the train on time.  Amazing how one small thing can change everything.  In one version, Helen goes home to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman and they break up.  In the other, she gets mugged and gets home right after the woman has left and she has no idea that anything is wrong.  In the first version of Helen's life, she gets a makeover, starts a new business and meets another man and falls in love.  The the other, she gets a second job to try to pay bills and finds out she's pregnant, all while her boyfriend continues to cheat on her.  It's fascinating to look at the different aspects of her life and it's a very original idea for a movie about what to do with life when the unexpected happens.
     9. Head Over Heels- (2001) Monica Potter and Freddie Prinze Jr.  Amanda is looking for a new apartment and finds a place living with 4 models, an amazing view, a huge closet and a tiny room, but it's affordable.  The models are shallow and selfish but friendly and sweet as well.  Amanda runs into a good looking guy with a huge dog in an unfortunate accident and realizes she's very attracted to him, but is shy because she just got out of yet another bad relationship where the boy had cheated on her.  One night Amanda is looking out the window to the apartment across the street which just happens to belong to the hottie with the dog (named Jim) when she sees what she thinks is Jim murdering a woman.  The police won't believe her so she and her model friends decide to be detectives and find out for themselves what happened.  In the meantime, she dates Jim to try to find out his nefarious purposes from up close and winds up falling in love with him.  Is he a murderer or not?  This movie is very funny (the model friends are stupid but hilarious) but there are a few scenes which are a tad crude.  All around a light hearted romantic comedy my husband I enjoy to watch.
     10. Oscar Wilde comedies- Oscar Wilde the playwright wrote a couple of very funny comedies: The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband.  They've both been made into enjoyable romantic comedies.  The first movie, starring Colin Firth, Rupert Everett and Reese Witherspoon is about a man named Jack who while in town goes by the name of Ernest and lives the life he's always wanted to.  He's in love and wants to propose to the girl but has opposition from her mother.  He also has a ward, a young girl named Cecily who he takes care of  in the country.  He talks to his friend Angernon about his life entanglements, then goes to the country to find out that Algernon has beat him there and has taken up the name of Ernest in order to woo Cecily.  A comedy of errors ensues while the two girls try to find out who is Ernest and the boys try to make the women they love, fall in love with them.  The second movie respectively, was made in 1999 and stars Rupert Everett, Minnie Driver, Cate Blanchett, Jeremy Northam and Julianne Moore.  Sir Robert Chilton is successful political figure with a virtuous wife, Gertrude, who he loves dearly.  His friend Arthur is friends with Gertrude and constantly flirts with Robert's sister Mabel.  Mrs. Chevely (who happens to be in love with Arthur) comes out of the woodwork with damning evidence from Robert's past and tries to blackmail him into voting a certain way on a proposition currently being debated about, by threatening to tell his wife about a past misdeed.  Robert does not know if Gertrude would ever forgive him for the one dishonest thing he did and he has to try to find some way of still doing what's right while trying to to let his wife find out about his past.  His friend Arthur lends a hand and mixups and funny dialogue and interesting situations occur while both men try to navigate through what to do with the different women in their lives.
